Self - assessement of my achievements

I`m going to present self - assessement of my achievements. I tried to assess myself as objectively as I could.
To start with, my weblog adress is lzakarauskaite.blogspot.com, so everybody can visit it and verify how fairly or unfair I evaluated my modules job.

First activity was to write a composition about my future profession. I overpassed this task quite easy because from the age of sixteen I knew who I want to become in my future career. I want to become a five stars hotel manager. Why? There isn`t a better thing than to work willingly, with pleasure and to know that your work isn`t fruitless. In this composition I explained what are the advantages and disadvantages of being a hotel`s manager and gave conclusions. I wrote that I want to be such a worker that someone could say: ''She was born to do this''. In my opinion, a good job is one of the things which makes the life worthwhile. It is very difficult to evaluate myself because I  am not sure what mistakes I have done. I know that self - assessement is a must, so for this activity I would write myself nine.

Another interesting activity was to compare hotels: one in Lithuania and another one abroad. I chose Stikliai hotel in Lithuania and The New York Palace hotel abroad. This task required effort and I found it quite difficult. I think this activity seemed to me so hard because I have never been in our country`s hotel and I was afraid that I wouldn`t be able to find the difference between hotels amenities. But in the end I managed to cope with the task. In this presentation I described what facilities, advantages and disadvantages each hotel has individually. Also, I presented photos of both hotels, in order you could select which is more luxurious and in which one you would like to stay if you would be a traveller. After this, I made the main differences between hotels and gave a short generalization. In conclusions, I recommended both hotels because both quality are really high. For this task I would write myself eight.

Besides, there is one more composition placed in my weblog. It is about a healthy lifestyle. I liked this activity because this topic wasn`t new to me. I am very interested in leading a healthy lifestyle so I found it quite easy to express my opinion by writing. In this composition I gave my BMI results and they showed that my weight is normal. Also, I wrote about my eating habits and I revealed what I usually eat. I talked about overweight problem as well. In conclusions, I said that our health depends on our lifestyle so we must try to choose which lifestyle is the best one. We can`t forget that the health is the biggest wealth. I wrote to myself nine.

During this module I wrote two letters. One was a hotel booking letter and another was a hotel confirmation. This task was not difficult. I wrote that I want to book a quiet, non- smoking, far away from any entertainment facilities, top floor suite for me and my friend for eight nights. Also, I asked for additional amenities. In a confirmation letter I confirmed reservation and special requirements. I think I deserved ten.

At home I had to write a CV. While writing it,  I forced with some difficulties but eventually I managed to do it. Personally, I think that this task is very beneficial because now I can use it for seasonal job - hunting. I would write myself ten.

During this module I have done one power point presentation in front of the audience. The presentation was about one of the most famous chefs in the world Gordon Ramsay. This task was hard to me because I have a fear of public speaking, I can not control my emotions. I`m lucky one because in the end I managed to overcome my fears and I performed very well and I was evaluated ten. I believe that I deserved this grade.

During this module we did a lot of oral tasks which are called role - plays. I counted that I wrote nine dialogues in my weblog. I liked this activity because I could improve my English knowledge in hotels and restaurants range. I learned how to communicate with customers, what receptionist should do to make customers staying an enjoyable one. Now I know how to greet customers, answer the telephone, ask who is calling , take messages, also I learned how to identify myself, how to give information, take a room reservation, take down guest details, say opening and closing times, say what is available, give polite explanations, make polite requests, ask where places are, ask what people want, ask how customers want to pay, take orders, make guests feel welcome, accept and apologize for complaints, give good customer service, describe hotel facilities. Personally, I think that this information will be very useful when I will be working in a hotel because I have to communicate with customers needfully. I believe that I learned how to make dialogues with a partner quite well, so I would write to myself nine.

What's more, in this module I learned how to write summaries. During all this time, I wrote four. One summary is about free Wi - Fi Internet access, another is about blue food and other two are about teenage master chef Luke and Slow Food, Slow Cities. At first, it was hard to convey the same idea in different words but by the time I found it easier and easier, and now I am able to write a summary without any difficulties. I evaluate myself from eight to nine.

Our daily business involved not only weblog activity, we also had to do exercises in students` book and workbook ''Highly Recommended''. I was very interested in language study segments because it is expressions which we had to learn during our activity and must use in our dialogues. I found these exercises quite easy to do. Personally, I would give myself nine.

Besides, during our activities we had to do listening comprehension exercises as well. We have already done nine listening comprehensions. Such listening tasks involves three exercises: T/F, synonym matching and gap filling. Of all the tasks performed in this module, listening is the most difficult to me. I often don`t hear what is saying and as a result when I need to choose if the answer is true or false I choose the wrong one. Also, in a gap filling exercise I force with new words which misleads me what I need to fill in. I evaluate myself seven.

I think, that during this five weeks, I managed to improve my English skills and I believe that I learned the main things about how receptionist should communicate with customers. I know that all this information will be useful in my near future if I want to be well qualified, so I promise not to forget what I have learned during this module.

Blue food

Summary

Nature makes food look more attractive so that we want to eat it. Some companies add colour to their food so that it looks more natural - looking. People are tend to think that such food is much more delicious, even when the flavour hasn`t changed at all. This is due to the fact that people are accustomed to see food in the same colours.

It is hard  to find a blue colour in natural food and usually it doesn`t look tempting or tasty. A long time ago it was believed that food which is naturally blue, black or purple can sometimes be poisonous. Also, it is said that the blue colour is often used to help people to lose weight because it reduces the appetite.

The test was accomplished in order to clarify if blue food can influence our appetite. In the test attended 20 people and they were devided into to groups, A and B. People in group A were with concealed eyes. People in group B could see everything.

In the test, the group with the masks ate more blue food and didin`t notice any difference between blue coloured and normal - coloured food. Group without masks left more blue food and ate more normal - coloured food. These people said they have noticed differences between blue food and normal - coloured food.

Slow Food and Slow Cities

Summary

The Slow Food movement as a protest started in 1986 in Italia. As a result of this movement`s influence, formed a new movemenet with four Italian cities in 1999. Slow Food organizes festivals such as the world`s largest food and wine event, the world`s largest cheese festival and both are organized in Italy. Besides, there is Slow Food Editore which publishes guidelines on Italian food, wine and culture in six languages.

Slow Food is about making our life quality better. Members of this movement think that slower way of our living and healthier lifestyle is much more beneficial rather than everlasting hurry and fast, junk food eating habits. They believe that right living has a positive impact to our culture. Slow food movement is sure that each nation has its food culture and points how it is important not to lose it.

Slow cities are about good daily life. Slow Cities want to upgrade their residents living and protect local businesses and traditions. Cities try to advertise native food production, small stores which can offer local speciality foods and restaurants where people can taste traditional dishes. Also, Slow Cities try to cut traffic jams, car noise which is caused by car alarms and neon-light signboards. Such cities want to create paths where people could cycle and also want to pay more attention to nature, flora and fauna. The founder of this movement thinks, that it is a nice try to avoid the American way of life and to stay unique.

To sum up, Slow Food and Slow Cities are about how to make our living more healthier, better and unique. According to the Slow Food members, it is very important to eat different food, discover local dishes that you have never tasted before, and realize that it is healthy and delicious. And most of all it is imprtant to understand that Slow Food isn`t just about eating right foods, it`s about connection while enjoying a good meal with other people we are sitting around a table.

Luke Hayes-Alexander Teenage Master Chef

Summary

Luke Hayes-Alexander is an eighteen years old boy who is famous in the whole world as a master chef. The main aim of his life is food. He adores everything about food - from buying it, till serving.

Luke is different from all of the other peers since childhood. Even when he was at the age of seven he preferred reading classics and books about cookery rather than playing or watching cartoons on TV. When Luke was just fourteen years old he started to learn at home and, of course, he was developing his knowledge about food further. After two years, when Luke was sixteen he became a chef as his father. Now Luke is a leader chef of Luke`s family restaurant in Kingston, Canada. This restaurant became a
cuisine because Luke is always trying to make new dishes wich flavour and taste are undiscovered.

Luke is very intrested in ingredients and recipes creation. He loves to encourage other people to cook.  His advise to young people is not to be afraid in getting dirty while cooking because it is fun.

A Healthy Lifestyle

Good health is the most important thing for a happy life. Wouldn`t it be great if we could eat whatever we want, whenever we want and stay healthy? Unfortunately, we can`t. We know that eating too much of the wrong sorts of food makes us become overweight and unhealthy.

Firstly, we know that eating too much junk food makes us become overweight and unhealthy. We are sure to have a weak body and be overweight if we eat sweets and junk food all the time. People who are overweight can get ill faster. Some of them put their faith on poor diet which has also been linked with heart disease or cancer. The only reliable solution is a healthy diet which gives us all the vitamins we normally require. My height is 157 centimetres and my weight is 48 kilograms. BMI showed that my weight is normal and that I don`t need to keep any diets.

Doctors say, a healthy lifestyle includes a balance of nutrious food, exercise and plenty of rest. The human body needs food for energy. It is important to eat many different types of food to get a variety of vitamins and minerals. I usually eat soups, fish, eggs, fresh vegetables such as cucumber, tomato, cabbage, carrots, fresh vegetables such as apples, bananas, oranges, mangos, water melions, lemon. Also, I try to drink a lot of water and try not to eat sweets because our bodies don`t really need them. To be healthy we must get plenty of rest too. The body needs to recuperate all of the energy lost in physical activity. We must sleep and rest enough in order to relieve stress.

Nowadays people put on too much weight because they become too lazy. They rely too much on cars. Of course, it is very comfortable to go somewhere by car when we are in a hurry but people started walking on foot rarely and as we know even walking can be a good exercise for our health. We should exercise at least 3 days per weak. I exercise 3 times per week, twice in a gym and once during my physical education lessons at college.

Finally, there are people who eat healthy food, regurarly exercises and don`t have any problems with overweight. Eating well does not mean that we should cut out all our favourite foods. It just means eating sensibly and trying to avoid too much junk food. The truth is that my lifestyle isn`t the most healthy way of living but I try to live as healthier as I can.

To sum up, good health is better than the best medicine. If our health is good, we are always in good mood. Our health depends on our lifestyle so we must try to choose the best lifestyle. We can`t forget that the health is the biggest wealth.

My future profession

It is always difficult to choose because you don`t know which decision is the best one. I know that to decide what to choose for my future career is very difficult and important but I am lucky one. From the age of sixteen I knew who I want to become in my future career. I want to have such a job which would be useful for people and me. I want to become a five stars hotel manager. Why?

There isn`t a better thing than to work willingly, with pleasure and to know that your work isn`t fruitless. Also, I think that a good salary is one of the main advantages of being a manager. Of course money isn`t everything. But I have to be sure I can provide for my future and I can help my parents, relatives. Another advantage of being in a management position is independence. I don`t like being told what to do. I have interesting ideas, suggestions which I want to realize by my own. Besides, managers working hours are flexible. I think it would be beneficial when I want to plan my leisure activity. In my opinion, the main advantage of being a manager is that this job involves good prospects for promotion. Such a stimulating work would allow me to use both my creative and research skills.

What I don`t like about this job is working enviroment. Hotel managers work long hours and sometimes even weekends, often under stressful conditions that require quick thinking, resourcefulness, diplomacy and communication skills. Also, I think that it is not only difficult but tiring too to deal with a constant stream of people complaining about something every day. Personally, the main disadvantage of being a manager is to be the first person who is blaimed when something go wrong.

To sum up, the life will show what is destined for me. But whatever I do I want it to be good and interesting and I want to be such a worker that someone could say: ''She was born to do this''. I promise I will do my best for my future career no matter how hard it would be because life is not about how many times you fail but how many times you get up and try. In my opinion, a good job is one of the things which makes the life worthwhile.
